Next Steps Decodables are fully decodable fictional texts containing only the grapheme-phoneme correspondences that occur in the main Sunshine Phonics Decodables program. The Next Steps Decodables books are the perfect bridge to ‘authentic’ texts, as students who have completed the main Sunshine Phonics programme have a substantial knowledge of extended code. Being able to read and enjoy these longer chapter books will give students the confidence to be able to pick up and read virtually any text, going forward.
The Next Steps Decodables titles are written from different characters’ viewpoints, in different tenses (present/past) and also contain interesting text features, such as table of contents, list of characters, a map, a focus text type (e.g. narrative, report, advertisement, newspaper article, email), a rap (to improve fluency) and a glossary. This gives students exposure to different styles of writing.
